Mike Newland, Director of Ag Business Development at the Propane Education and Research Council (PERC), sheds light on this groundbreaking area of bio-based fuels.

Renewable propane presents an exciting opportunity to address our energy and environmental needs. Unlike traditional propane, which is derived from fossil fuels, renewable propane can be produced from sustainable sources, offering a greener alternative. Newland emphasizes the potential of renewable propane to complement other ag-based products in the renewable fuels marketplace.

One intriguing aspect of renewable propane is its connection to crops like camelina, which can thrive in regions with challenging climates, such as parts of the Pacific Northwest. Camelina's versatility makes it a viable option for generating renewable propane without competing with food production. Newland encourages producers with marginal land to consider cultivating camelina as a means to contribute to renewable propane production.

Renewable propane faces skepticism due to its novelty. However, Newland stresses the importance of exploring new opportunities, especially in agriculture, where innovation drives progress. By embracing renewable propane, producers can contribute to sustainability efforts while potentially tapping into new revenue streams.

Renewable propane offers comparable performance to conventional propane, making it suitable for various applications, including heaters, grain dryers, weed burners, and grills. Additionally, it boasts even lower carbon emissions, aligning with sustainability goals and environmental stewardship.
