Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is offering Intro to Planning and Zoning for Local Officials workshops this spring. These sessions will help local leaders understand zoning laws, land use decisions, and their responsibilities in shaping community development.
The workshops will take place in various Iowa locations, covering practical applications of planning and zoning principles. Each session includes interactive discussions, real-world case studies, and networking opportunities.
Luke Seaberg, ISU Extension community development specialist, emphasized that these workshops provide essential tools to help local decision-makers make informed choices about zoning and land use.
Workshop Dates and Locations
The three-hour workshops will be held across Iowa, with sessions including a light dinner and networking opportunities:
- April 2: Spirit Lake
- April 8: Iowa City
- April 16: Fort Dodge
- April 22: Sioux City
- April 29: Dubuque
- May 6: Johnston
Who Should Attend?
The workshop is designed for local leaders, including city council members, county supervisors, planning and zoning commissioners, municipal staff, and regional planners. The sessions cater to both beginners and experienced officials looking for updates on new zoning trends and legal considerations.
What Will You Learn?
Topics include comprehensive planning, zoning variances, special uses, nonconforming uses, hearing procedures, and ethical considerations. Using case studies, attendees will see how zoning laws apply to real situations.
Registration Details
The registration fee is $65 per participant, with a discounted rate of $55 for groups of three or more from the same city, county, or nonprofit organization. Customized training options are also available.
