Forty Iowa youth have been inducted as new members of the State 4-H Council, beginning their terms during the closing ceremony of the 2024 Iowa 4-H Youth Conference on June 27.
These young leaders will serve as ambassadors for the Iowa 4-H Youth Development program, both statewide and in their local counties.
Selected through a rigorous application and interview process, State 4-H Council members are chosen based on their leadership, communication skills, and potential to contribute to the program. The council offers members the opportunity to develop a wide range of life skills, including leadership, communication, and professionalism.
State 4-H Council members play a vital role in organizing the annual Iowa 4-H Youth Conference, which brings over 350 high school students to Iowa State University each June.
They also help at the Iowa State Fair and other 4-H events, visit counties to promote state and national opportunities, and lead the 4-H’ers for 4-H fundraising campaign.
"Youth voice is essential to keeping Iowa 4-H relevant and responsive to today's teens," said Madeleine Bretey-Smith, 4-H leadership and civic engagement specialist. "These young people gain valuable skills that prepare them to be future leaders in their communities."
Council members like Lauren Greving from Carroll County and Addison Wicklund from Winneshiek County have expressed gratitude for the friendships and skills they've gained.
The council fosters a strong sense of community and leadership among its members, with retreats throughout the year focusing on civic engagement, teamwork, and personal growth.
Applications for the 2025 State 4-H Council will open on January 1, 2025, and close on February 1. Interested youth are encouraged to apply for this valuable leadership opportunity.
