The Iowa Pork Industry Center (IPIC) has introduced a new feed contingency calculator to help farmers estimate their available feed supply and improve their preparedness for unexpected disruptions. This tool complements the publication IPIC 208A, first released by Iowa State University Extension in November 2024.
Swine specialist Mark Storlie, who authored the publication, highlighted the importance of planning for feed shortages. “Unexpected incidents can derail your plan to have a timely feed supply,” he said. “While some events are unforeseeable, contingency planning helps minimize risks, and this calculator is one way to be prepared.”
The Excel-based calculator allows farmers to input data and calculate how many days of feed they have available based on current inventory. An accompanying information sheet provides guidance on using the tool effectively.
Developed by Iowa State University researchers Nick Gabler and Kayla Miller, the calculator and information sheet are available for free on the IPIC website’s nutrition page. This initiative aims to assist pork producers in managing their feed resources more efficiently and preventing disruptions in livestock nutrition.
By integrating this tool into their farm management practices, producers can ensure they have a reliable strategy to maintain feed supply and avoid potential shortages. The calculator provides a practical and hands-on approach to better farm planning, helping farmers stay prepared for unexpected challenges in livestock nutrition.
