Leading aviation and agriculture groups urge farm bill amendments

By Jamie Martin

Amidst ongoing legislative discussions, prominent figures from the aviation and agricultural sectors are emphasizing the need for the Farm Bill to foster advancements in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). This call to action involves major airlines and a coalition of agriculture associations. SAF, derived from renewable agricultural resources, offers a chance to diversify U.S. agricultural markets, strengthen rural economies, and reduce emissions within the aviation industry.

Organizations like the Aerospace Industries Association, Airlines for America, and major commercial airlines, alongside various agricultural associations, have presented a unified front. They advocate for the Farm to Fly Act's inclusion in the Farm Bill, which would formalize SAF's role within existing USDA Bio-Energy Programs and promote collaboration on SAF production and use.

The act aims to standardize emissions measurement through the GREET model, ensuring that the environmental benefits of SAF are accurately captured and promoted. This would also support climate-smart agricultural practices that are crucial for low-carbon fuel production.

With broad bipartisan support, these amendments could significantly benefit U.S. farmers and biofuel producers by creating new markets and boosting the domestic supply of low-emission fuels for aviation. The move could serve as a pivotal moment for integrating more sustainable practices in both the agriculture and aviation sectors, marking a step forward in U.S. environmental and economic policies.
