Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is offering a free lunchtime webinar to help small food businesses improve their food safety knowledge and practices. Scheduled for August 12 from noon to 12:30 p.m., the session is titled “Safe Food, Smart Business: Understanding the Basics and the Consequences.”

This virtual event is led by Hannah Hansen, food safety extension specialist with ISU, and is designed for food producers such as cottage food operators, farmers market vendors, and small-scale processors. The goal is to educate entrepreneurs about the essential role food safety plays in protecting both their customers and their business reputation.

“Whether you're a cottage food producer, farmers market vendor or small-scale processor, understanding the basics of food safety is essential for protecting your customers and your brand,” said Alex Van Alstyne, food business extension specialist with Iowa State.

During the 30-minute session, participants will explore:

  • The importance of food safety for consumers and businesses
  • Common risks like biological, chemical, and physical hazards
  • Easy and effective ways to reduce food safety risks
  • How ISU Extension and Outreach can support entrepreneurs with resources for food safety, product development, and innovation

The webinar is aimed at those just entering food production as well as businesses seeking to improve their safety practices.

Although the event is free, registration is required. This session provides practical tools and direct access to food safety experts who are committed to supporting Iowa’s food businesses through every stage of growth.
