ISU Extension Launches Disaster Readiness Website for Iowans

ISU Extension Launches Disaster Readiness Website for Iowans

By Andi Anderson

Iowans experience many types of disasters each year, making preparedness essential for reducing risks and protecting lives.

To strengthen statewide readiness, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach has launched a new Disaster Readiness website. The site serves as a central location for trusted information and practical resources that help Iowans prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters.

With Extension staff located in all ninety-nine Iowa counties, the organization plays an important role during emergencies by supporting local communities and helping people rebuild after disasters.

The new website reflects this commitment by offering research-based education and guidance that meets real community needs.

Disasters are complex events that require planning before, during, and after an emergency. The Iowa Extension Disaster Education Network team includes more than twenty Extension staff and faculty members from multiple program areas.

This team uses research, local partnerships, and community education to reduce disaster impacts across the state.

The website follows the disaster cycle framework, organizing information into four stages: preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation. This structure helps users quickly find the right resources at the right time.

The site uses an all-hazards approach, covering eighteen different types of emergencies, including natural biological human caused and technological disasters.

Resources are designed for different audiences. Individuals and families can find home safety tips, emergency planning guides and recovery information.

There are mental health and emotional well-being resources to support people coping with stress after disasters.

Community leaders, local governments and businesses can access tools to protect operations, strengthen resilience and support local recovery efforts.

Farmers and agriculture professionals can find information on protecting crops, livestock and farm operations during extreme weather events and emergencies. Guidance also includes biosecurity practices to reduce risks during disasters.

The Disaster Readiness website will continue to grow with updated information and timely resources. By helping Iowans plan ahead, the site supports safer communities, reduces losses and improves recovery outcomes.

The initiative highlights ISU Extension and Outreach’s mission to empower individuals, families farms and communities to remain resilient in an ever-changing world.
