Iowa Donation Garden Network Opens Registration For 2027 Season

By Andi Anderson

The Iowa Donation Garden Network (IDGN) is now accepting applications for the 2027 growing season, offering community garden organizers an opportunity to access valuable educational resources, networking opportunities, and statewide support. Organizers interested in joining the program are encouraged to register by December 31.

The network is led by the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Master Gardener Program in partnership with Iowa Total Care. Established in 2025, the initiative was created to support community gardens that grow and donate fresh produce to local families and organizations. Through education, collaboration, and resource-sharing, the network aims to strengthen gardens and increase their positive impact on communities across Iowa.

The program helps garden organizers improve their ability to grow nutritious food, recruit and engage volunteers, and manage projects more effectively. By bringing together leaders from different communities, the network promotes the exchange of ideas and encourages long-term success for donation gardens.

The network continued to expand during 2026. Leaders representing 59 community donation gardens across 43 Iowa counties participated in the program. According to network data, 76% of members reported gaining new knowledge through their involvement, while 71% implemented new practices that improved their garden operations and community outreach efforts.

One participating garden leader highlighted the value of the program by stating:

“The program generally helped us become more organized and have a better idea of what we were accomplishing,” one garden leader said. “The educational portion of the Zoom meetings was really helpful, and the toolkit was a valuable tool.”

Membership in the Iowa Donation Garden Network provides several benefits. Participants receive access to quarterly virtual educational meetings that cover topics related to gardening, volunteer management, and food donation efforts. Members also receive a comprehensive donation garden toolkit designed to support planning and daily operations.

Additional benefits include promotional signage and posters for member gardens, inclusion in a statewide garden map, and participation in an annual impact report that highlights the collective achievements of the network. Members also gain access to a private online community where garden leaders can share ideas, ask questions, and learn from one another.

A major advantage for 2027 participants is that membership will be offered at no cost. This opportunity is made possible through financial support from Iowa Total Care, allowing more gardens to benefit from the program’s resources and services.

Alicia Herzog, Master Gardener program manager with ISU Extension and Outreach and leader of the network, emphasized the importance of supporting community garden volunteers and leaders.

“The work of donation garden leaders and volunteers is essential to the health and well-being of communities across Iowa. Their dedication to growing and sharing fresh food deserves meaningful support,” said Alicia Herzog, Master Gardener program manager with ISU Extension and Outreach, who leads the network. “Through the Iowa Donation Garden Network, ISU Extension and Outreach is proud to strengthen connections, provide educational resources and empower these resilient leaders as they continue their vital service.”

As interest in community food donation programs continues to grow, the Iowa Donation Garden Network remains committed to helping gardens succeed. Through education, collaboration, and free membership opportunities, the program is supporting efforts to increase access to fresh food while strengthening communities throughout Iowa.
