Iowa State's Research Farms Hosted Over 100 Field Days in 2023

By Andi Anderson

Iowa State University's Research and Demonstration Farms experienced an eventful 2023, marked by transitions and substantial outreach under the guidance of newly appointed director Kendall Lamkey. With a vibrant leadership change following the retirement of Mark Honeyman in 2022, Lamkey expressed enthusiasm about showcasing the farms' innovative work and the contributions of specialists.

Diverse research agendas dominated the year, covering crucial aspects like crop and livestock production, soil health, drought management, and pest control. The 15 farms hosted more than 100 field days, offering engaging demonstrations led by Iowa State's Extension and Outreach specialists. These events, spread across the state, provided a unique platform for farmers and the public to connect with researchers, gaining insights into modern agricultural practices.

"These farms are tangible extensions of what transpires within the campus and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences," Lamkey emphasized. Notably, the turnout at the Horticulture Research Station's Fall Field Day, attracting over 250 attendees in partnership with Iowa Public Radio, was a highlight, showcasing the public's keen interest in horticulture and food production.

Tim Goode, the research farms manager, highlighted the farms' appeal to a wide demographic, including youth-focused events that spotlighted agricultural careers and safety. The absence of farm connections for many Iowa youth makes these engagements pivotal, offering firsthand exposure to farming and Iowa State's agricultural endeavors.

Moreover, new infrastructure developments like the Research and Learning Center at the Southeast Research Farm and ongoing campaigns for improved facilities at the Northern Research Farm indicate a promising trajectory for enhancing agricultural research and public interaction.

"As agriculture evolves, so do societal needs. These modern facilities equip us to address contemporary agricultural challenges and educate Iowans about critical issues," Lamkey affirmed.
