Iowa Science Fair Awards Youth for Innovative Projects

By Andi Anderson

Iowa’s 68th State Science and Technology Fair brought together 636 junior and senior high school students on March 26–27 to showcase more than 500 science and engineering projects. Students from 77 schools and 38 counties competed for over $285,000 in prizes, awards, and scholarships.

The fair is a key event in Iowa’s STEM education, encouraging Grades 6–12 students to use real-world scientific research aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards. These standards aim to build critical thinking and communication skills essential for academic and career success.

“This year we welcomed 20 new schools and celebrated incredible student innovation,” said Alexa Groff, SSTFI director and Iowa 4-H STEM specialist.

Highlights include Antariksha Sharma of Maharishi Schools, who won Grand Champion for her project on detecting neurodegeneration using a tear-based test. Other winners included Benjamin Lothamer and Shanza Sami, recognized for advanced robotic and environmental projects.

The fair also included junior high winners, educational outreach at Iowa State University, and a new Category Reception that connected students with industry leaders.

Special 4-H awards were presented in STEM, agriculture, health, and more, celebrating how science impacts daily life and communities. Local farmer influence was reflected in ag-focused projects like methane emission reduction and livestock feeder automation.

Top students will represent Iowa at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair in Columbus, Ohio, from May 11–16, 2025.

The fair concluded by awarding dedication trophies and special recognitions for long-term student participation. With student curiosity and innovation on display, Iowa’s future in science looks brighter than ever.
