Iowa Livestock Producers Express Concern Over Rising Disease Threats

By Andi Anderson

Livestock diseases are a growing concern among Iowa farmers, as shown in a recent study by Iowa State University’s Nanovaccine Institute.

The study, based on the 2024 Iowa Farm and Rural Life Poll, surveyed 432 livestock producers about their concerns and preparedness regarding major livestock diseases.

Diseases like highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS), and bovine respiratory syncytial virus (bovine RSV) have caused significant losses in recent years.

HPAI alone has led to the loss of millions of poultry, higher egg prices, and even cases of infection in humans and other livestock.

The report revealed high concern for diseases like bovine respiratory disease, hoof-and-mouth disease, and bovine RSV, with over 70% of respondents expressing worry. Swine and poultry producers were especially concerned about PRRS, swine flu, and avian influenza.

However, some farmers showed less concern for certain diseases. For example, 22% of cow-calf producers and 16% of fed cattle producers said they were not concerned or unsure about bovine RSV. Similarly, one-third of cow-calf producers expressed low concern for Johne’s disease.

When asked about their confidence in managing disease outbreaks, 58% agreed current systems are effective, and 53% said they have access to needed resources. Still, about one-third were unsure, and around 9% disagreed with both statements, showing gaps in confidence and preparedness.

According to the report’s authors, while many farmers trust the current system, the uncertainty and low concern for some diseases indicate a need for more education and support to help producers identify, manage, and prevent future disease outbreaks.
