Applications are now open for the 2026 Leadership Bootcamp, a program designed to help communities, counties, and nonprofit organizations build effective local leadership programs. Managed by the Iowa Rural Development Council and sponsored by the Governor's Empower Rural Iowa initiative, the program aims to strengthen leadership capacity across the state.
Leadership Bootcamp provides selected participants with valuable resources, including training, mentorship, strategic guidance, and seed funding. Participants also receive a $1,000 grant to support local leadership development efforts. The program is intended for communities looking to launch new leadership initiatives or refresh existing programs.
The training focuses on practical skills that can help communities develop strong and sustainable leadership networks. Participants gain knowledge in leadership development, facilitation techniques, community assessment, and local engagement strategies. The program also creates opportunities for participants to connect and collaborate with leaders from across Iowa.
“Leadership Bootcamp gives communities a structured way to think about the leadership capacity they need and the support to begin building it,” said Himar Hernández, Iowa Exchange Leadership event chair and assistant director of Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Community and Economic Development (CED).
“Participants build practical skills in facilitation, community assessment, and leadership development, while connecting with peers from across the state. The goal is to help communities move from interest to action with training, mentorship, and tools they can use locally.”
The initiative is part of the broader work of Community and Economic Development (CED), which supports leadership growth throughout Iowa. With programs and partnerships in all 99 counties, CED helps communities improve leadership education, community engagement, program evaluation, and long-term development planning.
Leadership Bootcamp will be held alongside the Iowa Exchange Leadership Conference on Oct. 27–28, 2026, in Pella. The annual conference brings together community leaders, volunteers, professionals, and development experts to exchange ideas, discuss challenges, and explore successful strategies for community and economic development.
The event also highlights the importance of developing future leaders and encouraging greater community involvement. Organizers believe that strong leadership is essential for maintaining vibrant and successful communities.
“We see community leadership as essential to the long-term vitality of Iowa communities,” Hernández said. “That includes supporting the people already leading in their communities and creating pathways for younger leaders to be part of the conversation.”
“Engaging the next generation is not separate from community leadership. It is part of how communities stay connected, responsive, and ready for the future,” Hernández said.
In addition to the Bootcamp and conference, CED supports leadership development through alumni engagement activities, educational workshops, keynote presentations, and its Leading Communities program. Together, these efforts provide communities with practical tools, valuable connections, and ongoing support to strengthen leadership capacity and advance local priorities for the future.
