Raised on a Virginia family farm, Martha Smith ventured to Iowa State University to gain insights into diverse agricultural landscapes.
Her endeavors since then have remarkably influenced agriculture in Iowa and beyond.
Now living in St. Louis, Missouri, Smith, a '04 graduate in agricultural business, was honored with the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences' 2023 Emerging Iowa Leader Award on September 2.
This accolade is reserved for dynamic individuals under 40, showcasing potential for monumental professional growth.
Daniel J. Robison of the College praised Martha's dedication, remarking, "Smith's evident commitment to the university and future Cyclones shines through her active alumni participation and her role on the ISU Alumni Association Board."
Starting with Monsanto, now part of Bayer Corporation, in Michigan, Smith's career has taken her on an enriching journey.
She has held roles from managing a Monsanto farm in Hawaii to handling sales for Monsanto’s Channel seed brand and lobbying for agricultural policies.
Her time in Hawaii served as a transformative experience. She shared, “Being a minority in Hawaii reshaped my perspective. Everyone should experience this transformative shift once."
Martha credits Iowa State for equipping her for these varied roles. "The vast network I formed at Iowa State played a pivotal role in my career trajectory," she recalls.
Her leadership flair was evident even as a student. Ron Deiter, a former professor, remembers Smith's leadership in over 30 student projects.
Jim Kliebenstein, another academic, isn't surprised by her professional ascendancy, noting her commitment and drive.
With an attitude of embracing challenges, Smith advises others, "Embrace the unfamiliar; it's where true growth and success lie."
This tale of Smith's agricultural journey inspires many to chase their dreams, push boundaries, and leave a lasting mark.
