Iowa Grain Marketing Workshop Helps Boost Farm Profits

Iowa Grain Marketing Workshop Helps Boost Farm Profits

By Andi Anderson

The Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach Farm Business Management Team is hosting a Grain Marketing Workshop in Ottumwa on January 6-7, 2026.

This two-day event at the Bridgeview Center aims to help farmers and agricultural professionals strengthen their grain marketing skills, regardless of their experience level from beginners to experienced marketers.

According to Paul Martin, ISU farm management specialist, the workshop offers valuable insights for farmers seeking to develop effective marketing strategies that can enhance profitability.

“The primary goal of the workshop is that any farmer, farm family member or employee will learn more about how to create successful grain marketing plans to improve selling price,” Martin explained.

Before the workshop begins, participants will complete several preparatory activities. These include calculating their 2026 production costs and cash flow budgets, completing self-assessment exercises, and evaluating their risk tolerance.

They will also watch a short educational video series by Chad Hart and complete the “Business IQ” survey, which helps identify strengths and weaknesses in managing uncertainty and achieving business success.

The workshop will feature several expert speakers. Gary Schnitkey, professor of agricultural and consumer economics at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, will discuss production costs and marketing goals. Chad Hart, ISU professor and grain markets specialist, will provide a market outlook and cover options and crop insurance strategies.

Logan Torrance, facility manager at Consolidated Grain and Barge Co., will talk about alternative grain contracts. In addition, ISU Extension specialists Tim Christensen, Eric Weuve, and Paul Martin will lead discussions on marketing tools and techniques. An industry panel will also answer audience questions.

Registration costs $100 and is limited to 60 participants. Interested individuals must register online by December 31. Lodging is available at the Cobblestone Hotel & Suites next to the Bridgeview Center, offering a special rate under “ISU Grain Group.”
