Iowa Forage Grasslands Council Annual Conference Returns in February

By Andi Anderson

The Iowa Forage and Grassland Council will host its annual conference in February, bringing together farmers, educators, and industry professionals focused on improving forage and grassland management across the state.

The event will provide education, discussion, and networking opportunities for anyone involved in forage production.

The one day conference will begin with registration in the morning, followed by educational sessions designed to address current forage challenges and opportunities.

The opening session will focus on grazing as a conservation tool, highlighting how managed grazing can support wildlife, improve public lands, and strengthen environmental outcomes.

Another session will feature forage disease education led by specialists from Iowa State University. Presenters will discuss rust and emerging diseases in forage crops, explaining how these issues affect both plant health and livestock performance.

The session will help producers better understand disease risks and management strategies.

In a related presentation, experts will review common pests and insects that impact alfalfa, silage, and other forages. This discussion will include how pest pressure influences feed quality and animal nutrition, giving farmers practical information to protect forage value.

During the lunch break, attendees will have time to view forage research posters, meet with tradeshow vendors, and network with other participants. The Council will also conduct its annual business meeting, confirm officers for the coming year, and hold elections for new board members.

The conference will conclude with a market outlook presentation from a livestock economist with Iowa Farm Bureau. The session will cover recent developments affecting cattle and forage markets, including trade issues and livestock health concerns.

The event is open to the public, and all individuals with an interest in forage production are encouraged to attend. The Iowa Forage and Grassland Council continues to support education and collaboration to strengthen forage systems and livestock production across Iowa.
