Iowa Extends Harvest Weight Limit for Trucks

Iowa Extends Harvest Weight Limit for Trucks

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has extended the weight limit for trucks hauling crops during harvest season. The new rule, which goes into effect immediately, allows trucks to carry up to 12.5% more weight per axle, up to a maximum of 90,000 pounds. This exemption is in place for 30 days, from September 11 to October 11, 2023.

The exemption applies to all highways within Iowa, excluding the federal interstate system. Trucks must still obey the posted speed limits and other traffic laws.

The exemption is designed to help farmers move their crops more efficiently during harvest season. By allowing trucks to carry more weight, farmers can reduce the number of trips they need to make, saving time and fuel.

The exemption is also expected to help reduce traffic congestion on Iowa roads during harvest season. The Iowa Department of Transportation will be monitoring the operation of the exemption and will take steps to ensure the safety of the public.

The exemption is supported by the Iowa Corn Growers Association, which represents corn farmers across the state. The association says the exemption will help Iowa farmers save time and money, and it will also help reduce traffic congestion on Iowa roads.

The exemption is the latest in a series of measures taken by the state to help farmers move their crops during harvest season. In recent years, the state has also increased the number of weigh stations and implemented other measures to ensure the safety of trucks hauling crops.

The exemption is expected to be a welcome relief for Iowa farmers, who are facing a number of challenges this harvest season. The state's corn crop is expected to be a record-breaking 3.3 billion bushels, and farmers are also facing rising input costs. The exemption will help farmers move their crops more efficiently and reduce their costs.
