Iowa Crop Report Shows Strong Growth

Iowa Crop Report Shows Strong Growth

By Andi Anderson

The Iowa Crop Progress and Condition Report provides a detailed overview of crop growth, soil conditions, and weather patterns across the state. Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig shared insights on the latest report, which is released weekly by the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service from April through November.

“It was another active weather week as a line of storms pushed through central and southeast Iowa last Wednesday, with strong winds leaving behind pockets of property and crop damage. The week ended with widespread and steady rainfall across Iowa,” he said. “Looking ahead, cooler temperatures are likely through the end of the week. Outlooks show warmer temperatures will likely return as we get closer to the 4th of July. The crops would benefit from some sun and warmer weather as we enter the heart of the growing season.”

During the week ending June 21, 2026, farmers had 4.5 days suitable for fieldwork, slightly more than the previous year. Soil moisture levels remained mostly adequate, with some areas experiencing short or surplus conditions. These levels play an important role in supporting crop growth.

Corn development showed strong progress, with 99% of the crop emerged, matching last year’s figure. Corn condition was rated 77% good to excellent, indicating healthy growth.

Soybeans also performed well, with 98% emergence, slightly ahead of last year. However, soybean blooming reached only 3% , falling behind the previous year. Despite this, 74% of soybean crops were rated good to excellent.

Other crops also showed positive conditions. Oats reached 87% heading, which is higher than last year, and received an 83% good to excellent rating. Pasture conditions were also favorable, with 75% rated good to excellent, supporting livestock needs.

The weather summary, provided by Justin Glisan, Ph.D., State Climatologist, Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, highlighted a mix of weather conditions. The state experienced storms, heavy rainfall, cooler temperatures, and occasional severe events, including strong winds and localized damage.

Rainfall varied across regions, with some areas receiving heavy amounts, especially in southeast Iowa. The statewide average precipitation was above normal. Temperatures were slightly cooler than usual, averaging below normal for the week.

Overall, the report shows that Iowa crops are progressing well despite weather challenges. Adequate moisture and generally healthy crop conditions suggest a positive outlook as the growing season continues.
