Iowa State University Extension and Outreach’s First Impressions program is now accepting applications for the 2025 program year.
This initiative helps communities enhance tourism, attract new residents, and build a skilled workforce, ultimately enriching the quality of life.
Designed in collaboration with the Iowa Economic Development Authority and the Iowa Tourism Office, the program assesses community strengths and weaknesses through the perspective of first-time visitors.
Inspired by Michigan’s successful program, Iowa’s version, led by Diane Van Wyngarden, state tourism specialist, equips communities with effective strategies to improve their appeal.
“The program identifies opportunities for communities to enhance their vitality and visitor experiences,” said Van Wyngarden. “It provides actionable steps to create measurable results.”
The assessment includes in-depth research and in-person visits by a trained team. Findings are analyzed to generate a detailed report containing recommendations for improvement. This report is shared during a public community forum with stakeholders and residents.
Communities with populations of 10,000 or fewer are encouraged to apply. Only five communities will be selected for the 2025 program year, making this a unique opportunity for towns to boost their economic and social appeal.
Applications close on January 31, 2025. This program serves as a stepping stone for communities to attract visitors, residents, and workforce, contributing to their long-term growth and prosperity.
For Iowa towns looking to redefine their future, First Impressions offers a pathway to greater vibrancy and success.
