The Iowa Beef Center is hosting a Cattle Feeders Day on December 10 at the ISU Armstrong Research Farm in Lewis. This free event is designed to help cattle producers and stakeholders learn best practices in herd health and animal handling to ensure optimal feeding outcomes and quality standards.
Organized by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach beef specialist Erika Lundy-Woolfolk, the event features both outdoor demonstrations and indoor sessions.
The day begins at 9 a.m. with an interactive feedyard demonstration led by Dr. Terry Engelken from ISU Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine.
This demonstration will cover proper handling and administering common animal health products, with insights on how these treatments impact carcass quality.
Following the demonstration, attendees will move indoors for sessions led by Lundy-Woolfolk, Dr. Garland Dahlke, and Dr. Engelken. Topics will include key health considerations in the feedlot and findings from a recent research study on nutrition’s effects on beef and dairy steers.
An optional Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) certification workshop will be offered from 1 to 3 p.m., providing producers with the knowledge and skills to improve beef quality and handling practices. The Iowa BQA program is a collaborative effort by the Iowa Beef Industry Council, Beef Checkoff, Iowa Beef Center, and ISU Extension and Outreach.
Both the morning and afternoon sessions are free, and a complimentary lunch, sponsored by Zinpro, will be provided. Producers can attend either or both sessions, but preregistration is required to ensure enough materials are available. To register by December 3, visit the Iowa Beef Center’s website or contact them at 515-294-BEEF (2333).
This Cattle Feeders Day offers cattle producers a great opportunity to enhance their knowledge and practices for better herd health and feeding efficiency.
