Iowa Agriculture Secretary Mike Naig recently visited the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) headquarters with a delegation of agricultural producers and food industry representatives.
Their visit focused on discussing new agricultural technologies, biofuels, and international trade opportunities.
The delegation learned about IICA’s technical cooperation in biotechnology, biosafety, biofuels, and bioethanol. Experts shared insights into the development of regulatory frameworks, training programs, and initiatives aimed at advancing agricultural innovation.
Iowa, a major hub for corn, soybean, pork, and beef production, plays a key role in global agriculture. Naig, who has led Iowa’s Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship since 2018, emphasized Iowa’s commitment to technology-driven farming. He met with IICA Director General Manuel Otero to discuss the future of agriculture in the Americas.
The visit included presentations by IICA’s international specialists in biofuels and biotechnology. Discussions focused on how Iowa can contribute to sustainable farming through technology transfer and agricultural assistance.
As part of their broader Central American trade tour, the Iowa delegation also traveled to Costa Rica and Guatemala.
The group included representatives from Iowa’s major agricultural organizations, such as the Iowa Economic Development Authority, Iowa Farm Bureau, and Iowa Pork Producers Association.
Naig praised IICA’s role in sustainable agriculture and food security, stating that the Institute helps translate scientific knowledge into practical farming solutions.
He reaffirmed Iowa’s commitment to agricultural innovation and its ability to supply grains and protein efficiently.
The visit strengthened international collaboration, highlighting Iowa’s leadership in modern agriculture, trade, and sustainable farming practices.
