Iowa is known for its rich agricultural heritage and it's no surprise that Iowa Secretary of Agriculture, Mike Naig, recently recognized exceptional individuals and organizations who have made a significant contribution to the state's agriculture community. At the 11th Annual Iowa Ag Leaders Dinner held at the FFA Enrichment Center in Ankeny, Naig presented the Ag Leader Awards to four recipients.
Agriculture in the Classroom was recognized for its leadership in agriculture education. With a focus on educating pre-K through high school students about agriculture, the organization works with thousands of teachers to reach nearly 150,000 students in hundreds of schools across Iowa. Their aim is to inspire students to become the leaders of tomorrow.
Central Iowa Shelter and Services received an award for their leadership in the community. The organization provides emergency shelter, food, and other services to those facing homelessness. In addition, their "agri-hood" program offers individuals valuable life skills and education and training opportunities in agriculture. This focus on education and opportunity is changing lives.
John Mortimer and John Lawrence were also recognized for their outstanding service in agriculture. Mortimer was instrumental in the growth and success of the Iowa Cattlemen's Beef Quarters at the Iowa State Fair. His dedication, innovation, and leadership benefitted many, including Iowa consumers and cattle farmers.
Lawrence, who held various leadership roles at Iowa State University, made significant contributions to the development of the Nutrient Reduction Strategy, assisted beef producers, and taught students. His commitment to Iowa agriculture and conservation is unmatched.
The Ag Leader Awards celebrate the inspiring individuals and organizations positively impacting all aspects of Iowa agriculture.
