Iowa 4-H Selects First Animal Science Ambassadors

By Andi Anderson

Iowa 4-H has announced the first-ever group of Animal Science Ambassadors, recognizing thirteen outstanding young leaders dedicated to agriculture, service, and leadership.

These students, selected through a competitive process, were honored on stage at the Iowa State Fair this August.

The 2025–26 ambassador cohort includes youth from counties across the state. Participants are between the ages of 16 and 20 and represent a wide range of project areas including beef, swine, sheep, dairy, poultry, horses, dogs, rabbits, and goats.

The Animal Science Ambassador Program is a year-long leadership experience designed to prepare young people for livestock-related careers. Ambassadors gain opportunities to improve their leadership skills, meet industry professionals, and share their knowledge of agriculture with schools, fairs, and community audiences.

Amy Powell, animal science specialist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, explained, “These youth have demonstrated a passion for animal science and a commitment to leadership and service. They will serve as advocates and play a vital role in helping others understand the importance of agriculture in Iowa and beyond.”

Ambassador Lydia Longhorn of Boone County expressed her excitement about mentoring younger members, stating that agriculture’s future depends on inspiring the next generation.

Ella Peterson, a freshman in agricultural communications at Iowa State, emphasized her passion for educating the public about agriculture, while Aiden Anderson, an agricultural studies freshman, highlighted how the program will help him explore opportunities across different livestock sectors.

Ambassadors will serve one- or two-year terms, gaining valuable hands-on experiences that prepare them for future education and careers in animal agriculture.

Through this program, Iowa 4-H continues its mission of developing leaders who can share the story of agriculture with communities across the state.
