Growing Together Iowa Grants Boost Food Security and Nutrition

Growing Together Iowa Grants Boost Food Security and Nutrition

By Andi Anderson

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach has awarded Growing Together Iowa mini grants to 27 projects, supporting food security and healthy eating across the state.

These grants, funded by USDA’s SNAP-Education program and Iowa Total Care, will provide fresh produce and nutrition education to local food pantries in 2025.

The initiative addresses rising food pantry usage by enhancing access to fresh fruits and vegetables. Volunteers, including Master Gardeners, maintain donation gardens, collect produce from farmers' markets, and promote nutrition education. In 2024, over 103,000 pounds of produce were donated to 102 food pantries, benefiting 87,000 Iowans.

“This program directly meets the need for fresh food while also creating opportunities for nutrition education and volunteerism,” said Katie Sorrell, project coordinator.

Projects vary across counties, with initiatives such as container gardening workshops, raised bed installations, and food safety training. Some counties, like Benton and Linn, aim to donate over 13,000 pounds of produce. Others, like Lyon County, are rebuilding gardens damaged by natural disasters.

“Iowa Total Care is committed to improving food security,” said Mitch Wasden, CEO of Iowa Total Care. “We are honored to support ISU Extension and its efforts in helping local food pantries.”

This year, new partnerships with 4-H and FFA will further expand efforts. Counties receiving grants will grow a wide variety of crops requested by food pantries, including peppers, okra, and green beans.

The Growing Together Iowa initiative continues to demonstrate how community-driven efforts can address food insecurity, support local farmers, and promote healthier eating habits in Iowa.
