The I-29 Moo University and Northern Plains Forage Association will continue their Forage Webinar Series on July 8, from 7 to 8:30 PM, offering producers and livestock owners an opportunity to gain key knowledge about forage storage, hay markets, and quality management.
This free virtual event requires online registration at least one hour before the start time. The session will include three expert-led presentations, each focused on different aspects of forage management.
Fred Hall, dairy specialist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, will lead with practical advice on how to properly store large hay bales to reduce spoilage and fire risks. Ensuring quality during storage is essential for feed efficiency and farm safety.
Jorge Carrillo, a USDA Marketing Service market reporter, will explain how hay reports are developed and used for purchasing decisions. Carrillo will share current market trends and clarify how trade-based pricing reflects real-time industry data.
Krishona Martinson, professor and extension program leader at the University of Minnesota, will provide research-based tips for hay producers. She’ll discuss how different hay rakes impact ash content, the importance of baling at the right moisture level to prevent mold, and how different wrap types affect forage quality and costs.
She will also explore long-term outdoor hay storage and its effect on beef cow intake, as well as which horse feeders minimize hay waste.
This webinar is ideal for hay producers, livestock owners, and forage market participants looking to improve their operations and decision-making.
