Food Leadership Program Sparks Local Change

Food Leadership Program Sparks Local Change

By Andi Anderson

Community members in Iowa who wish to enhance their leadership and collaboration skills in local food systems can participate in the upcoming Local Food Leader 101 certification workshop.

Hosted by the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Farm, Food and Enterprise Development Program, the two-day event will be held on December 11–12, 2025, in Ames.

Local Food Leader 101 is designed for anyone involved in community food initiatives, such as farmers market managers, nonprofit organizers, local government staff, and volunteers. The course aims to equip participants with knowledge and confidence to strengthen food networks and promote sustainable community development.

“This training gives people the tools to turn ideas into action,” said Krista Smith, extension farm to early care and education coordinator with ISU Extension and Outreach FFED. “Whether you’re running a food pantry, working with producers or trying to connect local food to schools, you’ll walk away with practical skills to strengthen your local network.”

Participants will learn about building common language in food systems, fostering dignity in local food work, effective facilitation, leadership, and evaluating projects. The sessions will also support personal and professional development.

The in-person training will be held at the Economic Development Core Facility in Ames and will include networking and hands-on learning opportunities. The schedule includes sessions on Thursday, December 11, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Friday, December 12, from 9 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Light breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Those completing the workshop will earn a certificate in Local Food Leader 101 and become eligible for the advanced Local Food Leader 201 program. Registration costs $250, covering materials and meals, and closes on December 1. Space is limited, encouraging early sign-ups.
