Five Iowa communities have been selected to take part in the 2025 First Impressions program, a key initiative aimed at improving tourism, attracting new residents, and enhancing the overall quality of life.
This year’s chosen towns are Independence, Manning, Perry, Washington, and Webster City.
Developed by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, the First Impressions program helps towns better understand how they are viewed by visitors.
It offers helpful feedback that allows communities to build on their strengths and work on areas that may need improvement.
The program is carried out in partnership with the Iowa Economic Development Authority and the Iowa Tourism Office. Since its launch, it has become a valuable tool for rural development and local progress.
“We’re thrilled to expand the program in 2025 to include five dynamic communities across Iowa,” said Diane Van Wyngarden, state tourism specialist. “It helps local leaders learn what works, what needs change, and how to keep growing.”
As part of the program, trained evaluators will visit each of the selected towns. They will explore local attractions, observe community life, and evaluate the overall visitor experience. Their findings will be used to create a detailed report that includes both short- and long-term strategies.
These recommendations will be shared publicly, encouraging open discussion among residents and local leaders. The goal is to ensure the plans are realistic, community-supported, and lead to meaningful change.
Van Wyngarden noted the importance of the first-time visitor experience and how it reflects the town’s potential to attract not only tourists but also new families and workers.
The selected communities will begin their assessments soon, with final reports expected later in the year. The initiative promises fresh ideas, stronger tourism, and lasting improvements for each participating town.
