Farm-to-Market System part of Iowa’s Record Investment in Transportation

Farm-to-Market System part of Iowa’s Record Investment in Transportation

Iowa has made a record investment in transportation, awarding over $1.47 billion across 839 projects since July 1, 2022. The investment aims to improve mobility and enhance the safety of roads and bridges at the city, county, and state levels.

The fiscal year 2023 investments awarded through the Iowa DOT include significant allocations for various transportation systems:

• Farm-to-Market System: $274.5 million investment to ensure smooth and efficient transportation of goods produced within the state, connecting Iowa to a global marketplace.

• Interstate System: $358 million investment to keep the flow of products steady and efficient throughout the state.

• Secondary System: $26.8 million investment to provide smoother pavements and better roadway markings, ensuring a comfortable and safer commute for drivers. • Urban Roads and Bridges: $136.8 million investment to facilitate quick and efficient transportation for families, enabling access to activities, medical appointments, shopping, and more.

Governor Kim Reynolds emphasized that a safe and reliable transportation system is crucial for enhancing the quality of life for all Iowans and sustaining the nation's economy. Iowa DOT Director Scott Marler commended the cities, counties, and contractors for their exceptional work in strengthening the state's economy and improving the transportation system.

The significant investments have also contributed to substantial progress in bridge infrastructure. Over the past 17 years, the number of poor-condition bridges owned by the DOT has decreased from 256 in 2006 to 26 in 2023. However, challenges remain, particularly concerning poor-condition bridges on Iowa's county road system.

With this impressive investment, Iowa is taking significant strides to enhance its transportation infrastructure, creating a safer, more efficient, and economically robust environment for all its residents and travelers.
