Housing stability remains an important issue for communities across Iowa. As eviction rates continue to rise, many individuals and families are facing difficulties maintaining secure housing. These challenges not only affect residents but also create concerns for local governments, housing organizations, and community leaders working to support stable and healthy communities.
To address these concerns, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Community and Economic Development will host an upcoming Community Matters Live webinar focused on the growing issue of evictions and housing instability. The event will provide information about current housing challenges and discuss ways communities can respond effectively.
The webinar is scheduled for October 28, 2026, and will be presented from noon to 1 p.m. It is designed for individuals involved in housing, planning, local government, and community development. Participants will gain a better understanding of the factors contributing to increasing evictions and learn about available resources that can help communities address these challenges.
The session will be led by Christopher Merkle, managing attorney of the Eviction Diversion Project at Iowa Legal Aid. During the presentation, he will discuss the recent rise in eviction cases and examine factors that are making it more difficult for people to remain in their homes. The discussion will also focus on the impact of housing instability on several groups, including contract buyers, residents of mobile home parks, and older adults.
In addition, participants will learn about the legal steps involved in the eviction process. Understanding these procedures can help community leaders, housing professionals, and residents better navigate housing-related challenges. The webinar will also highlight resources and support systems available to communities facing large-scale eviction events.
As housing affordability and stability continue to be important concerns, educational programs such as this webinar provide valuable opportunities for learning and collaboration. Bringing together experts, researchers, Extension specialists, and community leaders helps strengthen local efforts to support residents and improve housing outcomes.
Community Matters Live is a monthly webinar series that focuses on topics affecting Iowa communities. The program regularly features specialists and professionals who share research-based information and practical solutions related to housing, planning, economic development, and community well-being.
The Oct. 28 webinar is free to attend, although registration is required. The session has also been approved for one hour of American Planning Association Certification Maintenance credit, making it a valuable learning opportunity for planning professionals.
By exploring the causes of rising evictions, increasing awareness of available resources, and encouraging community engagement, the webinar aims to help Iowa communities strengthen housing stability and better support residents facing housing-related challenges.
