Iowa 4-H wins big in youth development

By Andi Anderson

Several 4-H professionals from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach received national recognition from the National Association of Extension 4-H Youth Development Professionals (NAE4-HYDP) for their dedication to Iowa youth.

The awards were presented on October 17 at the NAE4-HYDP Conference in Boise, Idaho, highlighting the professionals’ positive impact on youth development across Iowa communities.

The award submissions undergo a rigorous judging process at the state, regional, and national levels, and the winners are announced at the annual conference. This year, five Iowa professionals received national service awards for their exemplary work and dedication.

Celine Beggs-Shoemaker, a state animal science education specialist, and Madeleine Bretey-Smith, specializing in leadership and civic engagement, were honored with the Achievement in Service Award.

This award is given to professionals with two to seven years of experience actively engaging in extension youth programs.

Maya Hayslett, a state crop sciences specialist, and Beth Bunkers, a youth program specialist for multiple counties in Iowa, received the Distinguished Service Award.

This award is presented to professionals who have served for more than seven years and remain actively involved in youth programs.

The Meritorious Service Award, designated for those who have served over 15 years and previously received the Distinguished Service Award, was presented to Annette Brown, a youth program specialist and northeast field team supervisor.

Additionally, Amy Powell, an animal science youth program specialist, received the 25 Years of Service Award in recognition of her long-standing commitment to youth development.

Mitchell Hoyer, the Iowa 4-H state program leader, expressed his pride in the achievements of the Iowa 4-H team, emphasizing their dedication to preparing young people for future challenges.

"Their recognition by the NAE4-HYDP is a testimony to our staff's positive impact on Iowa youth and families, ensuring they are ‘Beyond Ready’ for life’s future challenges and opportunities," Hoyer said.

“Beyond Ready” is a national 4-H initiative aimed at empowering young people with the resilience, skills, and confidence needed to thrive in today’s fast-paced world.

Through their efforts, these Iowa 4-H professionals are making a lasting difference in their communities, helping youth grow into capable and resilient leaders.
