Discover woodland management at Kerns’ farm

By Andi Anderson

Iowa Learning Farms invites you to a Woodland Management Field Day on November 7, 2024, at Jody and Jim Kerns' Farm near Edgewood.

This free event, running from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., will offer attendees a unique glimpse into effective woodland management practices that enhance both environmental quality and economic return.

Hosted at 1463 200th Ave., Manchester, IA, the field day will feature the Kernses sharing their extensive experience in woodland establishment and the restoration of degraded forest areas. Their firsthand accounts will provide valuable lessons on maintaining and enhancing one of Iowa’s most precious resources—its 2.1 million acres of productive hardwood forests.

Emma Kerns, a new Forestry Field Specialist from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, will lead a tour of the property, discussing key management strategies and the developed forestry management plan.

Additionally, Dave Asche from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources will discuss the integration of forestry management with the Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP), highlighting how woodland conservation contributes to broader environmental goals.

The day will conclude with a complimentary meal and a drawing for ISU Prairie Strips honey. Due to limited space, reservations are required by November 1, 2024.

For reservations and more information, contact Liz Ripley at 515-294-5429 or ilf@iastate.edu.
