Expert to Discuss Risk-Managing Principles at Iowa State

Allison Schrager has spent her career studying risk.

Schrager, an economist, award-winning journalist at Quartz and author of "An Economist Walks into a Brothel," will present a lecture at Iowa State University.

"Managing Risk in a More Uncertain World: What We Can Learn From Surfers, Studs, and Sex Workers" will take place at 7 p.m. Feb. 17 in the Memorial Union Sun Room. This lecture is free and open to the public.

Schrager studies how people manage risk in their lives and careers. She will discuss five principles for dealing with risk shared by some of the world's most interesting risk-takers. Schrager has worked in finance, policy and media. She is currently an adjunct instructor in the Center for Global Affairs at New York University.

She cofounded LifeCycle Finance Partners, LLC, a risk advisory firm that develops innovative technology solutions to finance retirement. Schrager is also a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, focusing her research on public finance, pensions, tax policy, labor markets and monetary policy.

Schrager has been a regular contributor to The Economist, Reuters and Bloomberg Businessweek. Her writing has also appeared in Playboy, Wired and Foreign Affairs. Previously, she led retirement product innovation at Dimensional Fund Advisors, and she has consulted for international organizations, including the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

She earned her Ph.D. in economics from Columbia University, and her bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Edinburgh.
