Virtual Food Systems Certification to Begin March 8

Recognizing the ways COVID-19 has emphasized the importance of resilient local food systems, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach has transitioned its nationally recognized Local Food Leader professional development certification course to a virtual format.

This certification includes cohort workshops hosted through Zoom and online curricula through Moodle.

"The Local Food Leader certification course is being offered in an all-virtual format, which allows participants to connect with other food systems practitioners across the nation," said Kaley Hohenshell, program coordinator with ISU Extension and Outreach's Farm, Food and Enterprise Development Program. "This cohort-style certification course includes both independent and group learning with an emphasis on networking between participants."

Local Food Leader. The Spring 2022 online workshop series begins on March 8 and ends June 28; registration closes March 1.

The Local Food Leader Certification teaches foundational competencies critical for successful food systems development through integrated virtual workshops and four online modules. Topics include equity in food systems, working in food systems, facilitation and coordination, and evaluation and professional development. The online modules offer intensive curriculum including a community food systems overview, methods of engagement and leadership, creating teams and tools for success and evaluation.

There are two options for completing this course:

LFL 101: Seven virtual workshop sessions over the course of four months.

LFL 201: Seven virtual workshop sessions over the course of four months + access to four online modules. Cost is $375. Register at store.extension.iastate.edu/product/15887

Those who successfully finish the course will receive a certificate of completion. Limited scholarships are available.
