Iowa Learning Farms, in partnership with the Iowa Nutrient Research Center and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, will host a free virtual field day on March 13 at 1 p.m. CT to discuss the role of cover crops and summer annual forages in supporting beef producers.
Forage Solutions for Beef Producers
Since 2012, Iowa has lost 125,000 acres of permanent pasture, forcing beef producers to maintain or expand production on limited land. Cover crops and summer annuals provide additional forage options while improving soil health and water quality.
A demonstration project conducted at three Iowa State University Research Farms evaluated different forage crops for their yield and economic feasibility.
Expert Insights on Cover Crops and Forages
Speakers at the virtual field day include:
Chris Clark, Erika Lundy-Woolfolk, and Patrick Wall – ISU Extension and Outreach beef specialists
Clark noted that summer annuals could help bridge the gap in forage production, especially during hot summer months when perennial pastures struggle. Lundy-Woolfolk highlighted that nitrogen application plays a key role in forage productivity, with the study testing plots with and without nitrogen to assess cost-effectiveness.
How to Join the Virtual Field Day
Participants can join live on March 13 at 1 p.m. CT by:
