The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development, led by State Director Theresa Greenfield, has announced an investment of $806,660 in 27 projects across Iowa.
This funding, provided through the Rural Energy for America Program (REAP), aims to lower energy bills, expand access to clean energy, and create jobs for agricultural producers and rural small businesses in Iowa.
“The projects that are being funded today will help lower costs, create jobs in rural Iowa, and help rural Iowa communities grow,” said Director Greenfield. “Under the leadership of President Biden, Vice President Harris, and Secretary Vilsack, USDA is committed to ensuring farmers, ranchers, and small businesses are directly benefitting from the clean energy economy.”
The REAP project grants are part of a larger nationwide announcement aimed at promoting clean energy and economic growth in rural areas.
These grants will help various operations across Iowa implement sustainable energy solutions, leading to significant cost savings and environmental benefits.
A notable example includes L&K Tabke Farms LLC, which received $164,250 to install three 15-kilowatt wind turbines at its livestock production operation in Moville, Woodbury County.
This project will save the farm $11,964 annually and replace 115,560 kilowatt hours per year, enough electricity to power 11 homes.
Another recipient, Kluver Chiropractic PC in Mount Vernon, Linn County, was awarded $10,500 to install a 6.3-kilowatt solar array.
This project is expected to save $1,409 per year and replace 7,478 kilowatt hours annually, which equates to the energy needed to power one home.
Cornelius Seed Corn Co., located near Bellevue in Jackson County, received $14,279 to install a new LED lighting system. This upgrade will save the operation $3,037 annually by reducing energy consumption by 31,306 kilowatt hours per year, enough to power two homes.
These grants underscore the USDA's commitment to fostering sustainable practices and economic resilience in rural communities.
By investing in clean energy projects, the USDA aims to support rural businesses and agricultural producers, ensuring they can thrive in an evolving energy landscape.
The full list of today's REAP awards in Iowa includes various other projects, each contributing to the broader goal of energy efficiency and sustainability.
These initiatives are expected to bring long-term benefits to the recipients and the communities they serve, reinforcing the importance of clean energy in rural economic development.
