Tips to Manage Spring Storm Stress and Emotional Impact

Tips to Manage Spring Storm Stress and Emotional Impact

By Andi Anderson

Spring brings warmer temperatures, blooming fields, and unfortunately, severe weather. Many people still feel the emotional effects of past storms, including thunderstorms, flooding, or tornadoes. These events, although short in time, can leave long-term mental health impacts.

Storm warnings and watches can remind people of frightening experiences, creating anxiety or panic. According to David Brown, a behavioural health specialist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, such emotional responses are normal. “Just knowing that these feelings are common can help reduce fear,” he says. Deep breathing and talking with others are two ways to help ease stress.

Tammy Jacobs, manager of the Iowa Concern Hotline, shares helpful steps from the American Psychological Association:

  • Ask family or friends for support.
  • Eat healthy meals and get proper sleep.
  • Keep regular routines like daily walks or mealtimes.
  • Try relaxing activities like reading or hobbies.
  • Avoid making big decisions while under stress.

Jacobs advises that if stress continues or daily life becomes difficult, people should reach out to a mental health professional or family doctor for help.
