An online Grant Writing 101 workshop will be held on April 1 to help individuals learn the essentials of developing strong and competitive grant proposals.
The session will run from 9 to 11 a.m. and is offered by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Community and Economic Development. The workshop is open to representatives of nonprofits, government agencies, and school districts who want to improve their grant writing skills.
Grant Writing 101 provides foundational training for participants who want to understand the grant process from start to finish. The workshop introduces common grant terminology, explains how to search for funding opportunities, and outlines practical strategies for writing proposals that clearly communicate goals and needs.
The session is designed to guide individuals through each step of the grant-writing process so they can build confidence in their abilities.
Lindsay Henderson, development specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach, emphasized the value of understanding the structure behind strong proposals. She explained, “Grant writing is easier to approach when you understand the process. This workshop breaks the work into practical steps, helping you move from identifying funders to writing a strong proposal.”
Henderson also noted that the workshop is helpful for participants with varying levels of experience. She said, “Some participants come in having never written a grant, while others want to refine their approach. No matter their background, they leave with tools they can immediately apply to improve their next application.”
The session covers multiple skills, including outlining clear project goals, gathering supporting information, strengthening narrative sections, and addressing common errors that can weaken proposals. Participants also learn how to develop accurate budgets that align with project objectives.
The registration fee for the workshop is $40 per participant, and advance enrollment is required. Additional information is available on the Grant Writing webpage, and participants may contact Lindsay Henderson at lindsayh@iastate.edu for questions.
This training opportunity aims to equip individuals with practical tools to successfully seek funding and support important community projects.
