One week left to apply for FEMA disaster assistance in Iowa

By Andi Anderson

Iowa residents who were affected by the severe storms, tornadoes, and flooding that occurred between April 26-27 and May 20-31, 2024, have just one week left to apply for FEMA Disaster Assistance. The deadline to submit applications is August 23, 2024.

Homeowners and renters in the impacted counties, including Adair, Adams, Cedar, Clarke, Harrison, Jasper, Mills, Montgomery, Polk, Pottawattamie, Ringgold, Shelby, Story, and Union, are eligible to apply for this federal assistance. FEMA Disaster Assistance can help cover costs for temporary housing, home repairs, and other critical needs that arose from the disaster.

To apply for FEMA assistance, residents have several options. They can visit the official website at DisasterAssistance.gov, call FEMA directly at 800-621-FEMA (3362), or download and use the FEMA app for a more convenient application process.

For those using a relay service, such as video relay service (VRS) or captioned telephone service, they can provide FEMA with the appropriate number for that service.

FEMA ensures that disaster recovery assistance is accessible to everyone, regardless of race, color, religion, nationality, sex, age, disability, English proficiency, or economic status.

If you or someone you know has experienced discrimination during the application process, FEMA provides a toll-free number at 833-285-7448 to report it. Multilingual operators are also available to assist applicants (press 2 for Spanish).

With only a short time remaining to apply, affected Iowans are encouraged to take advantage of the available assistance to help rebuild and recover from the devastating impacts of this year's severe weather.
