New Tech Helps Farmers Control Livestock Disease

New Tech Helps Farmers Control Livestock Disease

By Jamie Martin

The recent spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in U.S. poultry farms has highlighted the importance of strong biosecurity measures in agriculture. Infectious diseases can spread rapidly and cause major losses, making preparedness essential for farmers.

To support this need, the National Farm Medicine Center at Marshfield Clinic Research Institute has introduced PremisesMapper, a free and easy-to-use web-based tool. This platform helps livestock producers design detailed biosecurity maps, which are important for managing disease risks.

Biosecurity means protecting farms from harmful organisms such as viruses and bacteria. A well-prepared biosecurity plan ensures that diseases do not enter or spread within a farm. One key part of this plan is a premises map, which provides a clear aerial view of the farm layout.

Premises maps include details like farm boundaries, buildings, entry and exit points, sanitation stations, and pathways for safe disposal of animal waste. These elements are crucial during disease outbreaks because they guide response teams and help contain infections quickly.

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection contributed to the development of PremisesMapper, ensuring it meets industry needs. Experts suggest that preparing these maps in advance can speed up emergency response and reduce damage to farm operations.

“In the event of a disease response, many livestock producers are required to submit a premises map to their state animal health office as part of their biosecurity plan,” said Kurt Grajkowski, emergency services coordinator with DATCP. Creating a biosecurity plan and premises map prior to disease outbreak can expedite response efforts and limit negative impacts on producer operations.

In the past, creating such maps required multiple tools or manual drawings, which could be time-consuming. PremisesMapper simplifies this process by allowing users to add shapes, icons, and important notes directly on a digital platform. It also offers guided steps to help farmers include all necessary details.

“This tool facilitates the development of maps for producers and streamlines the transfer of maps to state officials and emergency response personnel,” said Jakob Hanschu, PremisesMapper product manager.

Initial feedback from users has been very positive. Farmers and officials report that the tool saves time and makes updating maps much easier.

In conclusion, PremisesMapper is a valuable innovation in agriculture. It helps farmers improve disease preparedness, protect livestock, and ensure smoother operations during challenging situations.
