Iowa Dairy Goat Clinics Help Youth Learn Showing Skills

By Andi Anderson

The Iowa Dairy Goat Association is offering valuable learning opportunities for youth interested in showing dairy goats.

Two fitting and showmanship clinics will be held in May, giving young exhibitors and their families a chance to build confidence and learn the proper techniques needed for dairy goat competitions.

These clinics are designed to support both beginners and experienced youth who want to improve their exhibition skills.

The first clinic will take place on May 9 in Bondurant, where participants can learn the essential steps in preparing their goats for the show ring.

Families attending will receive guidance on grooming, handling and presenting goats confidently during competitions. Anyone interested in the Bondurant session is encouraged to contact Judith McIvor via email or text for more details.

A second clinic will be offered on May 16 in Clare, hosted by Susan and John Saathoff. Participants can reach out to them via text to receive information about the event.

The Clare clinic will focus on teaching youth how to position, lead and manage their animals in a calm and controlled manner, which is a key part of successful showmanship.

These clinics serve as supportive spaces where youth can ask questions, practice hands‑on skills and learn the expectations of dairy goat shows.

Proper fitting helps ensure animals look clean, healthy and well‑trimmed, while showmanship teaches exhibitors how to communicate confidence and care through their animal handling. Both skills are essential for performing well in county fairs, state fairs and other youth livestock events.

Families interested in the world of dairy goat exhibition are encouraged to attend one of these clinics. By participating, youth gain practical skills, improve their understanding of animal care and build the confidence needed to show their goats successfully.

For complete details, youth and parents should reach out directly to the clinic hosts. These events reflect the Iowa Dairy Goat Association’s continued support for youth development and quality livestock education.
