Montana Expands Trade with Japan

Montana Expands Trade with Japan

By Jamie Martin

Governor Greg Gianforte, with Director Streit, engaged Japanese government and business leaders in Tokyo to expand Montana’s trade and innovation partnerships in technology, energy, and agriculture. The meetings emphasized Montana’s strong business environment and global connections.

“Montana and Japan share a long history of partnership rooted in respect, innovation, and opportunity,” said Governor Gianforte. “We’re building on that foundation by expanding our collaboration in technology, energy, and agriculture to create more good-paying jobs and investment in Montana and Japanese communities.”

In discussions with Keidanren, Japan’s largest business federation, Montana’s pro-business climate and innovation economy were showcased. Focus areas included advanced manufacturing, photonics, and bioscience, with participation from Montana’s Commerce Department, Photonics and Quantum Alliance, and the Mansfield Center.

Montana has experienced significant bioscience growth, ranking sixth nationally, and is fifth in academic R&D spending growth. Its high concentration of photonics and quantum technology companies contributes to a global industry valued at $1.75 trillion. Montana has maintained long-term business partnerships with Japan and Korea for over 30 years.

Governor Gianforte met energy partners such as JERA Co., Joban Railway, and Mitsubishi RtM Japan, reaffirming Montana’s commitment to supplying reliable coal energy. Montana possesses the largest recoverable coal reserves in the U.S., exporting nearly half of its 26 million metric tons annually, mainly to Asian markets.

The governor honored Nippn Foods for its long-term investment in Montana wheat, presenting a plaque to President and CEO Toshiya Maezuru. Further meetings with Vice Minister Takehiko Matsuo and METI explored opportunities in photonics, quantum technology, and advanced manufacturing.

The day ended with a Montana Appreciation Reception celebrating over 100 guests and recognizing contributors to Montana’s agriculture, education, and technology sectors. These efforts strengthen Montana-Japan relations, promoting innovation, investment, and economic growth.
