Maximize revenue - Cover crops and relay Intercropping unveiled

The workshop series on cover crops and relay intercropping organized by Iowa Learning Farms and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach provides an excellent opportunity for farmers and landowners to enhance their understanding of sustainable farming practices. Here are the key details highlighted in the announcement:

Cover Crops:

  • Purpose:
  1. Reduce soil erosion.
  2. Suppress weeds.
  3. Mitigate nutrient runoff into water bodies.
  4. Increase organic matter in the soil.
  5. Provide forage for livestock.

Relay Intercropping:

  • Purpose:
  1. Grow three crops in two years.
  2. Obtain a marketable small grain crop.
  3. Generate additional revenue for the farmer.

Workshop Information:

  1. Dr. Matt Helmers, Iowa Nutrient Research Center director.
  2. Dr. Mark Licht, associate professor and extension cropping systems specialist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.
  3. Dr. Jon Dahlem, Iowa State University postdoctoral research associate.

  • February 21, 2024 | Mahaska County Extension Office, Oskaloosa, IA.
  • February 22, 2024 | Youth Development Center – Jones County Fairgrounds, Monticello, IA.
  • February 27, 2024 | Southeast Research Farm, Crawfordsville, IA.
  • February 28, 2024 | East Shelter House – Swan Lake State Park, Carroll, IA.
  • February 29, 2024 | Cass County Community Center, Atlantic, IA.

Time: 12:00-2:00 p.m.

Reservation Information:

  • Free and open to farmers and landowners.
  • Reservations required for adequate space and food.
  • Attendees will enjoy a complimentary meal.
  • Entered into a drawing for ISU Prairie Strips honey.
