Mahaska County Master Gardeners Announce Spring Plant Sales

Mahaska County Master Gardeners Announce Spring Plant Sales

By Andi Anderson

The Mahaska County Master Gardeners have announced plans for two community plant sales in 2026, providing residents an opportunity to purchase quality plants while supporting local volunteer programs.

These sales help raise funds for gardening education, public workshops, and future community events.

The first event will take place on Saturday, April 18, from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. This early spring sale will feature vegetable transplants ideal for the start of the growing season, along with “second time around” gardening items that may include tools or reusable supplies.

The second sale, the group’s traditional annual event, will be held on Saturday, May 16, from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. This sale will highlight perennial plant divisions as well as annual flower and vegetable transplants.

Both events will be located at the Mahaska County Extension and Outreach Office auditorium, 212 North I Street, Oskaloosa.

Proceeds from these sales help support Master Gardener programs throughout Mahaska County.

Funds are often used to bring in expert speakers and host free educational events for the public. Because of past plant sale support, many programs remain open to community members at no cost.

The Mahaska County Master Gardeners are celebrating their twenty‑third year of service. Their program began after the county held its first Master Gardener training in 2003.

Operated through Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, the program offers research‑based education in home horticulture.

Participants receive horticulture training and volunteer their time to promote gardening knowledge and community improvement. The program welcomes anyone 18 or older who has an interest in gardening and a desire to contribute positively to their community.

More details about these events and other horticulture programs are available at the Mahaska County Extension Office at 212 North I Street, Oskaloosa, by phone at 641‑673‑5841, or online at www.extension.iastate.edu/mahaska/yardgarden.htm.
