Iowa Agriculture Teacher Receives 2026 STEM Teacher Award

By Andi Anderson

The Iowa Governor’s STEM Advisory Council at the Iowa Department of Education has named Anna Brooks, agriculture teacher at Ames Community School District, as a recipient of the 2026 Iowa STEM Teacher Award.

The award recognizes outstanding educators who inspire students and strengthen science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education across the state.

Now in its 12th year, the Iowa STEM Teacher Award is sponsored by Google. Each year, one full-time licensed PK-12 teacher from each of Iowa’s six STEM regions is selected for the honor.

Brooks was chosen as the North Central Region recipient for her dedication to innovative teaching and student achievement.

“The 2026 Iowa STEM Teacher Award recipients exemplify the kind of educators who inspire curiosity, creativity and a lifelong love of learning in students,” said Iowa STEM Bureau Chief Justin Lewis. “We are honored to acknowledge their outstanding contributions to STEM education and their efforts to shape the future of Iowa’s STEM workforce.”

Brooks is recognized for integrating STEM concepts into agriculture education in meaningful and practical ways. Her teaching focuses on innovation, collaboration, and student-centered learning. Urban agriculture plays a central role in her curriculum, helping students connect classroom lessons to real-world applications.

“Iowa is leading the new era of American innovation through AI infrastructure, and Google is proud to call the state home,” said Dan Harbeke, Regional Head of Public Policy and External Affairs at Google. “The importance of STEM education has never been greater, and we are thrilled to honor these extraordinary teachers who work on the frontlines inspiring and teaching the next generation of innovators to fill the jobs of tomorrow. By working together, we can provide access to STEM learning that will equip students with critical skills that lead to economic opportunity and highly-skilled jobs right here at home.”

Brooks was nominated by two colleagues who praised her commitment to excellence and high academic standards. She actively seeks professional development and serves as a National FFA Teacher Ambassador.

Through partnerships with businesses, local organizations, and Iowa State University, she provides students with valuable hands-on experiences such as participating in CropQuest at Ames Research Park.

As part of the award, Brooks will receive $1,500 for her classroom and $1,500 for personal use. She will also be honored through statewide recognition events.
