Gov. Kim Reynolds has taken swift action in response to recent severe weather, issuing a disaster proclamation for four counties affected by the May 6th events. The proclamation activates crucial assistance programs aimed at aiding residents in Clarke, Marion, O’Brien, and Pottawattamie counties.
Under the Iowa Individual Assistance Grant Program, households with incomes up to 200 percent of the federal poverty level can receive grants of up to $5,000. These grants cover a range of necessities including home or car repairs, replacement of clothing or food, and temporary housing expenses. Applicants must provide original receipts for reimbursement of actual storm recovery expenses. The deadline for submitting a claim is 45 days from the date of the proclamation.
Additionally, the Disaster Case Advocacy Program has been activated to address serious needs resulting from disaster-related hardship, injury, or adverse conditions. This program provides individualized assistance to help affected individuals create a comprehensive disaster recovery plan. There are no income eligibility requirements for this program, which remains open for 180 days from the date of the governor's proclamation. For more information on accessing the Disaster Case Advocacy Program, individuals can contact their local community action agency or visit iowacommunityaction.org.
Through these initiatives, the state aims to provide essential support to those impacted by the recent severe weather, offering assistance and resources to aid in the recovery process.
