Iowa 4-H State Council Begins Planning for 2026 Youth Conference

By Andi Anderson

Preparations for the 2026 Iowa 4-H Youth Conference are now underway after young leaders from across the state gathered for the Iowa 4-H State Council Winter Retreat. The retreat took place January 31 to February 1 at the Des Moines Y Camp in Boone.

During the two-day event, the 2025–2026 State Council focused on leadership training, collaboration, and detailed planning for the conference, which will be held June 23–25, 2026, at Iowa State University.

Over the course of the weekend, council members divided into committees to organize key components of the conference. They brainstormed ideas for service projects, educational workshops, guest speakers, youth participation, recreational activities, and overall event coordination.

Madeleine Bretey-Smith noted that the winter retreat plays a critical role in shaping the conference, as members transform their ideas into practical plans that reflect the interests and needs of young people.

The community service committee discussed impactful service-learning activities that will allow delegates to understand the importance of community involvement. Meanwhile, the creative engagement committee focused on promotional strategies and methods to ensure participants feel welcomed and connected.

Committee co-chair Saylee Gingerich emphasized the importance of creating an inclusive atmosphere, explaining that every aspect of the event, from marketing to free-time activities, is planned thoughtfully to engage all delegates.

Additional committees concentrated on educational programming and event management. Members suggested possible keynote speakers, workshop topics, and large-group leadership sessions.

The registration, housing, and food committee evaluated check-in procedures, orientation materials and meal arrangements. Co-chair Conner McCoy explained that careful organization is essential so that attendees feel prepared and enthusiastic from the moment they arrive.

Participants also took part in the When Everyone Leads program, where they developed confidence in everyday leadership practices. Many members shared that they improved their ability to value different viewpoints, ask meaningful questions, and solve real-world challenges collaboratively.

One meaningful activity during the retreat was the creation of tie blankets for the Ronald McDonald House in memory of former council member Jacy McAlexander. Members were encouraged to continue this service initiative within their local counties and to support the Pop Tabs for Jacy and Do All the Good You Can challenges.

Planning efforts will continue through online meetings and additional retreats as council members prepare for the 2026 Youth Conference and other statewide programs throughout the year.
