Iowa 4-H Launches New AI Bootcamp for Future Tech Leaders

By Andi Anderson

Iowa 4-H has launched a new Artificial Intelligence Bootcamp designed especially for high school youth in grades 9–12. The program will be held from December 29 to 31 at the Digital Ag Innovation Center in Ames.

Registration is now open, and students do not need to be current 4-H members to participate. The boot camp aims to introduce young learners to artificial intelligence, computer science and emerging technologies in a simple and practical way.

The event is being developed in collaboration with the Translational AI Center at Iowa State University. Through this partnership, participants will explore the foundations of AI using hands-on activities.

Students will work on projects involving machine learning, data ethics and real-world applications of AI in areas such as agriculture, health and environmental systems. The program focuses on helping youth build both technical skills and an understanding of the responsible use of AI tools.

A national 4-H survey shared that 64% of teens believe AI will be essential for their future careers, while 72% feel they need more guidance to use AI confidently.

This boot camp addresses those needs by pairing students with mentors, educators and industry professionals. These mentors will help participants understand AI concepts, explore career options and learn important ethical practices.

The new program is part of Iowa 4-H’s larger goal of preparing youth for the future workforce. By combining classroom learning with real-world applications, the boot camp encourages digital literacy, analytical thinking and problem-solving skills. It also supports Iowa’s leadership in responsible AI education.

“Through our partnership with TrAc, we’re building skills that empower both youth and educators with critical digital and analytical competencies,” said Alexa Groff, 4-H STEM education specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach. “This initiative places Iowa at the forefront of responsible AI education and workforce innovation.”

Students can register through 4HOnline by selecting the Iowa 4-H AI Bootcamp under the Events section. Non-members can create an account, choose the Participant option and register the same way. Enrollment is limited, so early registration is encouraged.

“Join us at this 4-H AI Bootcamp — learn about artificial intelligence to boost your learning, build better habits and explore new tools for success. Let’s grow and learn together,” said Aditya Balu, data scientist at the ISU Translational AI Center.
