Holstein Breeders Earn Top Breed Age Average Honors

By Jamie Martin

Holstein Association USA has announced the 2025 Top Breed Age Average results, recognizing dairy herds across the country for outstanding performance in the association’s classification program. The lists honor breeders who consistently demonstrate quality, balance, and productivity within their herds.

“By factoring in age and stage of lactation, Breed Age Average (BAA) values help provide a fair comparison across all animals,” says Amy Fletcher, Senior Manager of Classification Operations. “Congratulations to all Registered Holstein breeders earning a spot on the Top BAA lists—an outstanding accomplishment.”

Breed Age Average, known as BAA, adjusts classification scores based on a cow’s age and stage of lactation. This approach ensures fair comparisons among animals at different points in production. Amy Fletcher, Senior Manager of Classification Operations, said the program highlights herds that excel through careful management and genetic planning.

In order to receive a whole herd BAA score, producers must classify at least ten cows using the Classic or Standard options. During 2025, 878 herds qualified for inclusion. The average herd included 66 cows, and the group’s average BAA score reached 108.3 percent.

The highest overall BAA score in 2025 was earned by Matthew T. Mitchell of Tennessee, with an impressive score of 116.4. Close behind was Jeffrey Jet Butler of Illinois, who achieved a BAA of 115.9. Juniper Farm Inc. of Maine also ranked among the top performers with a score of 115.6.

Three additional herds tied with a BAA score of 115.5. These included Triple-T Holsteins of Ohio, Milk Source LLC of Wisconsin, and Currie Holsteins of New York. Their results reflect long term focus on herd improvement and consistent classification participation.

Holstein Association USA also published additional rankings, including the Top 200 BAA Herds overall, Top 25 Herds by Size, and Top 10 College and University Herds. These lists are available online and provide further insight into herd performance across different categories.

The Breed Age Average program continues to serve as an important benchmark for dairy producers. Holstein Association USA congratulated all recognized breeders for their dedication to excellence and their positive impact on the dairy industry.
