Microgreens have become increasingly popular because of their bright flavors, appealing appearance, and high nutritional value. These tiny plants often contain more vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants than fully grown vegetables, making them an excellent addition to healthy meals.
As interest in nutrient-rich foods continues to grow, many people are eager to learn how to raise microgreens at home.
To support this interest, a local Extension and Outreach program hosted a community workshop that introduced residents to the world of microgreens. Before attending, many participants were curious about growing fresh food but unsure how to begin. The event aimed to provide simple, practical steps that anyone could use to get started.
Guided by experienced growers, including a Master Gardener and a local farm representative, attendees learned how microgreens can improve everyday meals and where they can be purchased locally.
More importantly, they were shown how easy it is to grow them at home with basic supplies. Each participant planted a tray of microgreens to take home, gaining hands-on experience and the confidence to continue experimenting on their own.
The workshop proved to be both informative and enjoyable for those who attended. After the event, 60 percent of participants said they planned to grow or use microgreens in their kitchens. Many described the session as a fun opportunity to learn something practical that could support healthier eating habits.
Efforts like this help community members grow their own fresh food, increase awareness of local agriculture, and strengthen their connection to nutritious food choices. By promoting simple home-growing techniques, Extension programs empower families to adopt sustainable practices that benefit their households and communities.
Through education, hands-on learning, and encouragement, residents gain valuable skills that inspire healthier lifestyles and a deeper appreciation for agriculture. Microgreens offer an easy, rewarding way for people of all ages to enjoy fresh, homegrown nutrition.
