Iowa Science Fair Seeks Volunteer Judges

Iowa Science Fair Seeks Volunteer Judges

By Andi Anderson

The State Science and Technology Fair of Iowa is seeking volunteer judges to support young innovators during its annual youth science competition.

This statewide event brings together students in grades six through twelve to present original research and engineering projects across a wide range of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields.

The fair is designed to encourage curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving among young learners. Students have the opportunity to share their work with professionals, receive helpful feedback, and compete for awards, scholarships, and advancement to higher-level competitions. Many participants describe interactions with judges as one of the most meaningful parts of the experience.

Project areas include plant and animal sciences, health and biomedical sciences, chemistry, engineering, mathematics, physics, computer science, robotics, environmental studies, and social sciences.

These categories allow students to explore real-world challenges and develop strong communication and research skills.

Volunteer judges play a key role in helping students build confidence and recognize their potential as future scientists, engineers, and innovators.

Judges provide thoughtful comments, ask questions, and share professional insights that help students improve their projects and better understand career pathways in STEM fields.

Professionals from education, industry, healthcare, agriculture, and other science-related areas are encouraged to participate.

Judges may serve in junior or senior high divisions. While advanced education or professional experience is preferred for senior high judging, prior judging experience is not required. All judges receive orientation to prepare for their roles.

Judges are carefully matched with project categories based on their education, experience, and preferences. This ensures fair and meaningful evaluations for students. Volunteers are also provided with lunch and refreshments during the event.

The science fair creates a supportive environment where students can practice presenting complex ideas, gain confidence, and connect with professionals who share their interests. For many students, it is their first chance to discuss their work with experts.

By volunteering as a judge, professionals help spark long-term interest in science and technology while encouraging the next generation of innovators.

The State Science and Technology Fair of Iowa continues to grow each year, featuring hundreds of students and projects that highlight youth creativity and dedication.

Individuals interested in becoming judges can register online and find additional details about schedules and project categories through the official fair website.
