The Habitat University podcast is launching a new "Habitat Safety Miniseries," designed to educate outdoor workers on essential safety practices.
Hosted by Adam Janke, extension wildlife specialist at Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, and Jarred Brooke, forestry and natural resources wildlife specialist with Purdue University, the series aims to keep Iowans and others across the nation safe while working outdoors.
The miniseries will address key safety topics, including prescribed fire safety, pesticide handling, heavy equipment operation, and chainsaw use. These episodes feature advice from safety experts who share practical tips for maintaining property safely and effectively.
In the first episode, released on September 3, Adam Janke encourages listeners to slow down and take the time to learn these safety skills.
“We want to work in a way that ensures we get to go home every night and return the next day to continue doing great work for wildlife and conservation,” Janke said.
Timed to coincide with National Farm Safety and Health Week from September 15 to 21, the series provides valuable lessons not only for farmers but for anyone using outdoor equipment or working on land conservation.
Janke emphasizes that while many people rely on self-taught knowledge for outdoor work, reviewing safety practices is critical to prevent accidents.
“These sessions will encourage listeners to think about the ‘science of safety,’ and to recognize the importance of being alive and well to continue making a difference in the outdoors,” Janke added.
The Habitat University podcast aims to raise awareness about the importance of safety in outdoor work and provide accessible guidance for maintaining safe practices while managing properties or working in conservation.
